Hattaway, a Christchurch accountant, has been awarded the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association’s gold star badge and certificate of merit in recognition of long service to the association. Mr Hattaway is the tenth member of the Christchurch R.S.A. to hold the gold star badge and certificate of merit. His service with the association began soon after he was discharged in 1919 when he became interested in his local Wellington sub-branch and held an executive post. When he transferred to Christchurch in 1937, Mr Hattaway continued his interest in the R.S.A., and became an executive member to the Papanui sub-branch. He was elected to the central executive committee in 1949 and was president from 1952 until 1956. Mr Hattaway continued as an executive member until 1962 when he did not seek re-election. He was also Canterbury district vicepresident in 1958-59 and 1959-60.

A former Christchurch City Councillor and member of the Christchurch Transport Board, Mr Hattaway was accountant to the Municipal Electricity Department until his retirement about six years ago.
