Heavy Tunnel Traffic More than 7500 vehicles travelled through the Christ-church-Lyttelton road tunnel during the week-end. This is the highest number of vehicles to use the tunnel in one weekend since last Easter. Up to 8.45 p.m. yesterday 7592 vehicles went through the tunnel. The total for Saturday was 3234, an increase of about 400 on the normal figure for a Saturday. At 8.45 p.m. yesterday 4358 vehicles had gone through the tunnel during the day, an increase of about 2000 on the usual Sunday figure. The high total yesterday was caused by the open day at Lyttelton held in conjunction with Antarctic Week. Windy Week-end The week-end weather would have been more pleasant without the persistent easterly winds, which became strong occasionally. Temperatures ranged around 60 degrees, with a maximum of 65 degrees recorded at Harewood yesterday, and 62 on Saturday. There was a frost of two degrees at Harewood on Saturday morning, followed by 10.7 hours of sunshine. There was no frost yesterday. The sky was lightly overcast with high cloud for much of the day. Snow Surveys Regular snow surveys in the South Island will be one of the proposals before the meeting this week of the national committee planning New Zealand participation in the International Hydrological Decade. They are designed to aid forecasting of water availability. Art Prize A prize in an international art competition organised by the children’s magazine, “Finding Out,” has been won by Shireen Graham, of the Okains Bay School, Banks Peninsula. There were 10,000 paintings entered in the competition by children from 24 countries. The prize won by Shireen Graham was one of 200 water colour paint boxes awarded to runners-up. Water Purity Water purity, of prime importance to public health, will be studied by a special sub-committee of the organisation planning New Zealand's part in the International Hydrological Decade. Because of the increasing imoortance of this matter, a Health Department representative is being added to the permanent national committee. Remembrance Day Remembrance Day was observed in Christchurch yesterday and in a number of churches special sermons were given to mark the occasion. Remembrance Day is held each year on the nearest Sunday to November 11 to mark the date when the Armistice, ending the First World War, was signed 46 years ago. City Celebrations Nearly 50 floats and five bands comprised the colour of the Whangarei city celebrations parade on Saturday over a route nearly four miles long.
