TROTTING Mitcham Picked To Win First Leg At Kaikoura

Mitcham should go close to winning her fourth race from her last five starts when she contests the Kaikoura Cup, the first of tne double at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s annual meeting on Monday. Mitcham won twice in dashing style over sprint distances at Oamaru last week-end and it is not expected that the extra six furlongs in this race will trouble her unduly.

Mitcham has always looked to be above average in ability, but it has not been until the last three weeks that she has really struck form. Her wins at Oamaru were achieved with a minimum of effort and even though the opposition in this race will be much stronger she should cope with it without too much difficulty.

Kinsella, a stablemate and sister to the Hannon Memorial Handicap winner. Orbiter, is one candidate certain to master a searching two miles on this track. Orbiter won this race in the record time of 4min 19 l-ssec 12 months ago, and Kinsella should make a bold bid to give her ownertrainer, W. L. Bagrie, his second win.

Kinsella was an impressive last-start winner over 13 furlongs and 96 yards at Forbury Park on October 10. She was well back in the field until the turn and then finished with a true stayer’s run. Bruce finished fourth and third in his races at the recent Greymouth meeting. He was far from disgraced as he was not at ease in the heavy going. Bruce is another pacer in fine form at present and he will have a great chance of extending his record in this event.

Seafield Scott, a member of F. E. Newfield’s team, has had a win and two seconds from his last four starts He was runner-up to Silver Mica on the second night at Greymouth and could do better on the firmer footing at Kaikoura.

Cuddle Doon, unbeaten in his last three starts, will be one of the more favoured candidates if he parades. He is on 36 yards, a mark which should not prove prohibitive to this highly-promising pacer. Dulcie Mae and Khraizon are two other capable pacers likely to show to advantage. If Lumumba begins reasonably well, he should win the second leg, the Memorial Handicap. He gained a sensational win at Oamaru on Monday after losing half a furlong at the start and looking to be out of the race. He has great speed and stamina and cannot be left out of calculations.

The consistent Our Kay is another smart pacer. She has

drawn favourably at No. 2 and should be in or near the lead all the way. Bourbon Lad, April Showers, Blue Adios, Pop’s Donation and Vaggi have all paced sound races in recent weeks and they could add interest to the finish. Fair weather is forecast and the track is expected to be in splendid order. Fields, with form, for the oncourse double are:—
