MAGISTRATES COURT Imprisonment On Vagrancy Charge

Three months’ imprisonment was imposed on Patrick Joseph Tighe, aged 55, a labourer, when he pleaded guilty before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, in that he had insufficient lawful means of support, on October 30. Sergeant S. W. Byers said that a police patrol was made of South Hagley park at 1.20 a.m. yesterday. In a football pavilion in the south-west corner of the park the accused was found sleeping under a seat. He was using his shoes as a pillow. The accused said he had not eaten for three days and had slept in the park for two nights. He told the police he had spent all his money on drink and friends, Sergeant Byers said.

REMANDED Charged with threatening to kill lan Douglas Bell on October 29, Alan Justin Carter. aged 43, a resturant proprietor, was remanded on

bail until November 5. Crosby Frank Cook, aged 41, a workman, was remanded in custody until November 11 on a charge of theft of 900 pounds of copper wire, valued at £37 10s, from the New Zealand Railways Department at Racecourse Hill on October 14. FAILED TO STOP David Thomas Roseingrave, aged 26, an airman (Mr W. F. Brown), pleaded guilty to charges of failing to stop after an accident on July 26 and falling to report damage. He was fined £7 10s on each charge and his driver’s licence was cancelled for three months. Sergeant Byers said that at

2 a.m. Roseingrave struck a vehicle parked in Garlands road. The other vehicle, worth £5O, was a write-off. Roseingrave did not stop but was interviewed by the police some time later. OTHER TRAFFIC CASES In other traffic cases brought by the police convictions were entered and fines imposed as follows: — Careless driving: Brian Michael Roughan, £6 and driver’s licence cancelled for three months: Lawrence John Hopkins, £2O: Albert Victor Walter, £2O; John David Carruthers, £6; Geoffrey Harold Malloch, £lO (no driver's licence, £2; no warrant of fitness, £1): Clifford Edward Hamlin, £lO and driver’s licence cancelled for three months, Jeffrey Arthur Edwards, £3. Falling to give way: Lester Wilfred Landry, £8; Reginald Harold James Johnson, £8; Winston Ormandy. £6: Stewart McNaughton Robertson, £5; Diana Maria Hall, £8 (no warrant of fitness, costs only): Ernest George Harrison, £10: Kenneth John Meyers, £8: Colin Graham Miles, costs only: Timothy Harvey Phipps. £7; Francis William Townsend, £lO and driver’s licence cancelled for three months; David Garth Reynolds, £7. Failing to stop at sign: Arthur Lawrence Gartery, £lO. No warrant of fitness: Peter Edward Hall, £3. Failing to stop at lights: John Arnold McGifford. £5. Exceeding 30 miles an hour: William Joseph Patterson, £5 (no safety helmet, £3; carrying pillion passenger without safety helmet, £1). No current driver’s licence: Majory Svensen, £2.

(Before Mr K. H. J. Headifen, S.M.) FINED £5 Charged with failing to give way to the right at the intersection of Armagh street and Madras street on September 14. John Ernest Morgan, aged 52, a driver (Mr L. M. O’Reilly) pleaded not guilty. He was convicted and fined £5. DISCHARGED Two schoolgirls, whose names were suppressed (Mr J. H. Gebbie and Mr R. G. Blunt) were convicted and discharged under Section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act when they appeared on charges of riding on a motor car in South Brighton Domain on September 27 in a manner likely to cause injury to themselves. They pleaded not guilty. CHARGE DISMISSED A charge of theft as a servant from the New Zealand Post Office against Ronald Joseph Murphy, aged 36, was dismissed. Murphy pleaded not guilty when the case was beard on Thursday. Mr R. G. Blunt represented the accused.
