POLICE WAGES

Increase In Britain (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Oct. 30. Britain’s 86,000 policemen are to have a pay rise of nearly Is 6d in the £—about 7 per cent —back-dated to September 1. A new police constable will start at £7OO a year, a rise of £65. He will get an extra £3O after a year. Constables recruited after December 1 who are 22 or older will do even better, starting at £BOO for men and £720 for women. Extra payments will be made to detectives working abnormally long hours. A special examination of recruiting problems in London and other areas may result in special area allowances. Under the new agreement a police constable with 22 years’ service will get £llO5 instead of £lO3O. The agreement on the increases will last three years.
