“BLACKMAIL VICTIM”
Accountant Stole £2BBO
(N.Z. Press Association)
NAPIER, Oct. 30.
An accountant, Desmond Leslie Sims, aged 27, who admitted seven charges of theft involving £2BBO in the Magistrate's Court at Napier today, had become the victim of blackmail, his counsel, Mr R. G. Gallen, told the court.
Mr Gallen said that after someone found out what Sims was doing, Sims was blackmailed. Although Sims did not suggest all the money was spent in this way, in fact, it only amounted to about £2OO, it was a constant drain on his resources.
An eighth charge of theft against Sims, involving £lOOO allegedly obtained from Mabel Florence Bowman, was dismissed when the police offered no evidence.
Mr W. A. Harlow, S.M., told Sims he was going to gaol him and he remanded him for sentence until Monday.
