British Backing To N.Z. Fish Project
(New Zealand Press Association) TAURANGA, October 21. Two British fishing concerns were entering negotiations with a New Zealand syndicate of fishermen and businessmen, which is to establish fish processing plants throughout the country, including the Bay of Plenty, Mr W. A. Park, an investigator for the syndicate, said in Tauranga today.
The companies had offered finance, equipment including vessels, and experienced assistance, said Mr Park. They could also be a great help in establishing overseas markets. Other British companies and an American concern had indicated their interest in the syndicates’ project, but no negotiations had been opened with them, he said. The group intends to specialise in fish varieties not at present extensively offered, and it was interested in export and establishing a “ship to shop” service. The project includes the proposed establishment of two processing plants in the Bay of Plenty. Among the less common lines the group intends to handle are shellfish, eels, crayfish, and species of fish not previously popular in New Zealand.
