DEMONSTRATION BY Y.W.C.A.

Keep fit exercises, ballets, judo, and an exhibition of modern dancing were among activities demonstrated by members of Young Women s Christian Association clubs and classes at an “open house” demonstration in the Latimer hall last .night Held annually, the “open house” presents to the public what the association is doing in the community. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) was guest of honour at the function. He congratulated the Y.M.C.A. on the opportunities it provided

for young people to express themselves, exercise their interests, and develop their abilities in a pleasant environment and under expert guidance. “With the expansion of our population, more facilities and opportunities must be provided for our children, to enable them to grow up as we would want them to,” Mr Manning said. One of the best influences for children was the commendation and encouragement of their parents, Mr Manning said. He was happy to see so many parents there to watch their children, he said. Mr Manning was welcomed by the president of the Christchurch Y.W.C.A., Miss A. I. Webb. Later Miss Webb presented badges and certificates to 15 junior and 3 senior members of the Y.W.C.A.’s Blue Triangle club. All of primary school age, the girls had won their badges by maintaining a high standard as club members, and having a knowledge of the international aspects of Y.W.C.A. On view in the hall was a display of handwork done by Blue Triangle Club and Y. Teen club members, drawings by the-junior art class and a display of posters by members of the Travel Club.

Teens club (modern dancing); Keep Fit club; junior ballet class; adult ballet class; Young Marrieds Club (slimnastics, and other activities); Campers Club; Judo Club and Latimer Club (badminton).
