PROTEST TO CHINA
Peace Group’s Cable Women for Peace of Christchurch have sent a cablegram to the Prime Minister of China (Chou En-Lai) deploring nuclear testing and urging China to desist from further explosions. “The cablegram will be followed by a letter from our group, including a resolution we passed at the meeting,” said the chairman (Mrs Louise Aldrich). The resolution was as follows:—“We believe that life is precious to everyone;
“We wish to do all in our power to protect our children and future generations from the heart-break of the results of nuclear fallout and the catastrophe a nuclear war would bring; “We urge the abandonment of plans for nuclear testing by France in the Southern Hemisphere; “We deplore China’s recent nuclear explosion and urge her to desist from further nuclear tests; “We commend India for its stand against joining the ‘Nuclear Club’.” The meeting made final arrangements for members to sit outside the Christchurch Botanic Gardens on the afternoons of October 25 and November 1 to take signatures for a petition to General de Gaulle against France’s proposed testing ip the South Pacific.
