ARGUMENT OVER SOUP
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 19. A Panmure restaurant proprietor, Ching Lee, aged 29, punched a customer in the face because he would not pay for a bowl of soup. Mr A. A. Coates, S.M., was told today. Sergeant C. H. Shearwood said the customer did not like the bowl of soup. He was brought a second bowl, but said this was no different from the first. He refused to pay and walked out of the restaurant. Ching Lee followed with two empty bottles and a meat hatchet. He threw one bottle which bruised the customer’s leg. The argument continued and Ching punched the man on the eye. Ching admitted the charge of assault. His counsel, Mr K. L. Peterson, said the customer was causing a disturbance in the restaurant, and had used bad language to Ching his wife in front of other people. The Magistrate adjourned the case for six months, with a view to discharge, and ordered Ching to pay £5 toward I the cost of prosecution.
