FIVE FACE CHARGES
Bookmaking In Hotels (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, Oct 19. The seriousness with which bookmaking was legally regarded, was shown by the maximum penalty of a fine of £5OO or one month imprisonment or both, said Mr G. J. Donne, S.M., today. He was dealing with five men arrested on Saturday on a charge of bookmaking. Pleading guilty were Rangikaripiripia Heretini, aged 38, married, unemployed, who was convicted and fined £35; Harris Patrick Martin (Mr J. D. Dillon), aged 40, married, civil servant £2O; Panapa Haira, aged 36, married, souvenir maker, £35; and Edward Morgan, aged 54, married, barman, £35. Athol James Edward Patterson, aged 42. married, driver (Mr C. R. Potter), was remanded on bail of £lOO till November 2. Senior Detective-Sergeant J. F. Stevenson said the men were arrested in different Rotorua hotels. Haira, Morgan and Heretini had admitted to being bookmakers’ agentsJ
