JUNIOR RED CROSS

Study Day For

Leaders

A successful study day for Junior Red Cross leaders was held at the Lady Wigram Hall recently. About 40 teachers and liaison officers representing circles throughout Canterbury attended.

The guest speaker was Miss J. Studholme, director of the New Zealand Junior Red Cross. She described the findings of the Educators’ Conference at Assam last year, and outlined some of the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Miss Studholme said that a handbook on accident prevention, prepared by the society in New Zealand, had been very well received by the South-east Asian Red Cross Forum held earlier this year in Sydney. It was hoped that it would be translated for use in developing countries. Toys, quilts, decorated boxes for Christmas hampers, and gifts for children and elderly people were included in an exhibition of many types of handwork displayed around the hall. Demonstrations of handcraft were given by Miss Studholme, Miss H. Fraser, Miss L. Saunders, and Mrs E. Colville.

The centre president, (Mrs R. I. Brake) spoke of the extension of Junior Red Cross overseas activities to include help for Fiji and Cook Islanders, and Sister J. Coles gave a talk on the health programme, involving first aid and home nursing instruction in primary and secondary schools.

A discussion was arranged by the centre organiser of the Junior Red Cross (Miss T. G. Eldridge), on the various problems encountered by leaders when organising circles.

Horticulture Visit—About 70 members of the Canterbury and Mid-Canterbury branches of the Institute of Horticulture visited Ashburton yesterday. The party toured the Ashburton domain and was impressed by the polyanthus display. It then went on to Mr J. H. Grigg’s estate at Longbeach, where it was entertained by Mrs Grigg and inspected the garden.
