VIGILANCE BY POLICE

Trafficking In Drugs (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 18. The Auckland police were closely watching the drugtrafficking problem, the head of the Special Duties Section. Inspector G. A. Dallow, said today. “Apparently, it is worse here than in other New Zealand towns,” he said. “This is not surprising considering that we have an international port and a population of more than 500,000.” Now there was more trade with Eastern countries, a closer watch would need to be kept on shipping. On this aspect of controlling drugs, the police have been working closely with the Customs Department. The police also received considerable assistance from the D.S.I.R. Since the beginning of the year, 10 Europeans have appeared before Auckland courts for drug offences involving marijuana, opium and pethedine. Nineteen Chinese have also been convicted for opium offences. “The worst trend we have noticed so far has been the use of opium by Europeans," said Mr Dallow. “Opium is far more dangerous than marijuana because of its addictive qualities.”
