So far rowing clubs at Kerr's Reach have not attracted msnv new members, but there were plenty of old and current members out on Saturday to give the seasen a good start. The new season was opened by the president of the Canterbury Rowing Association, Mr B. R. Walker. Mr Walker said people had all been reading of the comparative failure of New Zealand's rowers at the Olympic Game-: There was only one good thing to come out of It and that would be more competition between Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand needed hard International competition, he said. An effort would have to be made to see this was done In spite of the expense as there would be no rowing at the next Empire Games. Mr Walker said It was possible New Zealand crews would make a return tour of Australia in 1965. The three clubs—Avon, Canterbury, and Union—took part In a massed row past and 16 boats—eights, fours, doubles, pairs and singles glided past the clubhouses. Both Avon and Union report ed about five new members and officials from the clubs said they could both handlo 12 new members.
