RACING Silver Kingdom Wins By 3 Lengths At Westport

(Front Our Own Reporter)

WESTPORT, October 11.

The Riccarton-trained gelding, Silver Kingdom, led all the way to win the feature event at Westport on Saturday. He came right away in die straight and won the Buller Hotels’ Handicap by three lengths from Meandering.

The Scanlon Hack Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double, was won by Shanty Town. The double was worth £l6 15s 6d for £l. ‘

Meandering was back early in the first leg, but moved around the outside near the half-mile to challenge the leader. However, Silver King-

idom had too much in reserve I and came away from him over the last furlong. Shalom ran exceptionally well first up for third. She was always handy to the leaders and ran on well to beat White Skies in a photo-finish for third. The favourite, Julloch, was well placed early, but was then boxed in, endeavouring to get him out for a clear run near the two furlongs, D. N.

Hadfield had to check off the heels of another runner and Julloch dropped quickly to the rear. Ashleigh was handy early but did not get the best of runs and finished well back. The others never raised any hopes. Impressive Shanty Town was an impressive winner of the second leg, the Scanlon Hack Handicap. This was his third successive win on the Westport track. Shanty Town has raced recently in the North Island where he was trained by T. Read, formerly of Nelson. The Khorassan gelding is now trained by his owners, Messrs W. H. Davis and J. R. Williams, of Richmond. Shanty Town’s performance was impressive because he had to race three wide most of the way and did not handle the home turn well. He still finished strongly without being hard ridden and won comfortably from Massakai, which made all the pace. Vivien Robe ran an even race for third, two lengths back, and Wycola faded to fourth after being handy and challenging at the furlong. The remainder never flattered. The only close galloping finish of the day came in the Colvin Hack Handicap, when the Westport-trained Serengeti beat the favourite, Beach Gold, by a neck. Scribbler was a head away third, with another neck to the fastfinishing Side Saddle. Results: CLIFF THOMAS STAKES No. 1, £150; 6f. 1/1 HESSMAIO (4) 8-7 F. H. Skelton 1 2/2 OH SALLY (9) 8-2 A. H.
