First Leg Won By Spring Garrison

Spring Garrison capped a consistent string of minor placings this season by convincingly winning the Banks Peninsula Handicap, first leg of the double at the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club’s annual meeting at Motukarara on Saturday.

Mr A. Clemens’ Garrison Hanover gelding gave the best of his rivals a start of 36 yards and a sound beating. Sirretta was second two lengths away, and Anterior, the best of the others which finished the course, was six lengths behind her. In all there were 23 starters in the Banks Peninsula Handicap but only 14 finished the course. El Adem was pulled up when hopelessly out of the contest after losing much ground at the start. Antonius fell with five furlongs to go and seven others, including the favourite Gin Sling, were involved in a smash at the straight entrance. Soon Handy Spring Garrison quickly made up his handicap and was sharing the sixth line with Legendary at the end of two furlongs. Half a mile out he was third on the inner, tracking Prinsuva which was tucked in behind the pacemaker, Danny’s Pal. C. McDonald worked Spring Garrison through to the lead as they came to the straight and it was all over then. Sirretta, which was in the line behind Spring Garrison for most of the race but beside him at the half-mile, gave chase from the furlong but made little impression.

Anterior, the early pacemaker but in the fourth line on the home turn, saved third by a head from Carina Star, which finished well from mid-field. Black Treasure, another well back in the field till late in the race, was a length away fifth. He beat Danny’s Pal, which took the lead with seven furlongs to go, by four lengths. The others, led in by Prinsuva, arrived at varying intervals. Slow Away . Cloudage recorded an outstanding performance and completed a double worth £54 7s for £1 when he outclassed his rivals in the Paparua Handicap. Cloudage was slow to get going and with a mile left to run was only five places from the tail of the field. A. M. Purdon took him forward gradually as they ran down the back and he was in the fifth line on the home turn.

Cloudage still had five runners to pass at the furlong but he gathered them in over the last 100 yards add was going away by a length at the finish. Bruce, which was following Cloudage on the home turn but ahead of the winner with a furlong to go, saved second by a head from Space Cadet which outfinlshed Golden Sari for third by a neck. Space Cadet was late working clean after racing mid-field on the inner for much of the race but Golden. Sari had tried for an all-the-way win.

Adio Morn, Johnny Supreme and Happy Ending were next in fairly close order and the favourite, Local John, which seemed to have every chance, led in the others.
