BADMINTON N.Z. Team Arrives In Singapore
(N.ZP.A.-Reuter— Copyright) SINGAPORE, October 11. The touring New Zealand badminton team was in high spirits on its arrival in Singapore yesterday on the first stop of its three-week Malaysian tour.
The team manager, Mr H. Purser, said the team morale was high and all the players were looking forward to the tour.
The team of seven will receive coaching sessions and will play friendly matches in the principal Malaysian towns. The first match is against Singapore on October 14. Mr Purser said badminton was becoming a very popular sport in New Zealand. If the country was to obtain world standard, frequent international outings were necessary. “To this aim, we have come on this tour to learn by attending coaching sessions, playing against your top state teams, and to adopt your tactics of play,” Mr Purser said. “Unlike the Malaysians, who are crafty players, especially at the net, our players rely too much on the smash. They practically smash their way to defeat This style wears them down fast and this is very noticeable when playing in hot countries,” he said.
