BOOM IN CRIME
‘Education A Factor’ (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LEWES (Sussex), Oct. 11. Lord Shawcross, an eminent British jurist, told a conference of magistrates in Lewes today that crime was booming. “It is not a game. It is a war in which we have to face the attack of sophisticated and skilful criminals able to exploit to their advantage all the facilities of the modern world.” The motor car, telephone, radio, aircraft, yachts, and improved standards of education had made it easier to commit crimes. Serious crimes were more highly planned and organised, more mechanised, often more violent and conducted more on a national than on a local basis than before. Lord Shawcross said that in Britain as a whole, it was probable that property worth over £20,000,000 would be obtained this year by crime. The proportion recovered would be small.
