Mother Appeals
(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) NEW YORK, Oct. 10. The 69 - year - old mother of the American, LieutenantColonel Michael Smolen, pleaded tonight with her son’s kidnappers, in Caracas, Venezuela, to spare his life, the Associated Press reported. She gave her message to the New York “JournalAmerican” to be relayed by the Associated Press in
Venezuela, with the hope it will dissuade her son’s captors from killing him. They have threatened to do so unless a condemned Communist terrorist in South Vietnam is spared. Here is the message by Mrs Smolen, who lives in New York: “I am an old woman. I know little about politics. I know little about the world. My world is my family. My love is for my children. “You say you will kill my son, Lieutenant-Colonel Michael Smolen. I can do nothing but weep. “I weep and I hope that you will be merciful to me. I hope that you will spare the life of my boy, and send him back to his father and me. “As your mothers would plead for you, I plead for my son. Let him live. I beg this of you. Mrs Katrim Smolen.”
