First Road Race To J. Power
Very satisfying form was shown by the 23-year-old J. Power (Christchurch) in winning the Canterbury road runners’ opening event of the season, held over a four-mile section of the provincial 10-mile championship course on Saturday afternoon. Power’s winning time for the distance was 20min 53sec, a good one considering he has only been in training for about a month.
Secund place went to the Anglican runner, J. Stuart, who finished comfortably in 21min 20sec. He is more suited to considerably longer distances and was quite happy with his effort.
The next three finishers all completed their final lap of the 440 track at Rugby Park within 5 sec of one another. R. Stewart (Shirley) narrowly headed B. Lewis (Olympic) by 4sec, who was in turn followed home by I. Sim (Baptist).
Power intends to concentrate on the mile and threemile track distances this season. He used the four-mile road event to test his fitness. Results were:—
J. Power (Christchurch), 20:53, 1; J. Stuart (Anglican), 21:40, 2; R. Stewart (Shirley). 21:42, 3; B. Lewis (Olympic), 21:46, 4; I. Sim (Baptist), 21:47, 5: M. Lusty (University), 22:22, 6; G. Whitfleld (Rlccarton), 22:30, 7; D. Cameron (Baptist), 22:32, 0; B. Eastgate (Marist), 22:36, 0; R. Hands (Methodist), 22:40,-10. There were 19 starters.
