FAVOURITE FOR 5000 M.

Lydiard Picks R. Schul (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TOKYO, Oct. 11. The world-famous New Zealand track coach. Mr A. L. Lydiard, said today that the American, R. Schul has “as good a chance as anyone” in the 5000 metres next week. Associated Press reported. Lydiard agreed with American track experts who picked Schul to win the 5000 metres. “He is the logical winner,” Lydiard said, “but no one really knows what the Russians will come up with.” Schul has a best time of 13min 38sec this year. But Lydiard did not agree that the brilliant 18-year-old Gerry Lindgren belonged in the first six in the 10,000 metres as some U.S. experts considered.

“He’s a good one all right, and he has potential to become a great one, but the Americans are probably building him up because he beat the Russians in Los Angeles in September,” Lydiard said.
