Official Report

The official report issued by the Christchurch Wooibrokers’ Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission says:—

“The second Christchurch sale of the 1964-65 season was held at the Wool Exchange, Addington, with a total offering of 21,123 bales submitted by four selling brokers. “The offering was mainly drawn frbm the Canterbury and Marlborough districts with a preponderance of halfbreds and medium to fine crossbreds, some second shear lines and a few Merino clips. The hogget lines included both woolly and shorn sorts. The condition of the wool generally was disappointing, mainly owing to bad seasonal weather and very dry conditions. A few bright and attractive clips were included but the bulk of the offering was carrying a fair amount of dust and mbit and was shorter in staple than usual, this being particularly noticeable in the crossbred lots. Pieces and oddments reflected the seasonal faults of the fleece offering. “Recent reports of an easing in the market were confirmed when the sale opened before a full bench of buyers. Best halfbred and Corriedale wools were about firm on recent rates in Dunedin but average and inferior sorts were part to 25 .per cent cheaper, with cross, bred prices in buyers’ favour. Under fairly good competition Continental buyers were prominent with local mills giving good support for the best fine wools. Bradford operated moderately and America and Japan were mainly interested in specialty lines. “Passings were considerably heavier than at recent sales.”
