SHARK PATROL BOAT FOR SURF CLUB

DUNEDIN, October 8. The St. Clair Surf Lifesaving Club will have a 20-foot shark patrol boat built for use this summer. Of fibre-glass construction, it is being designed on the lines of the latest Australian surf boat, but adapted for local conditions. It was at the St. Clair beach that a swimmer was attacked last February by a shark and later died. A public appeal will be opened soon to raise about
£5OO to cover the cost of thel boat and a trailer for it. The designer of the boat is Mr H. D. Gillies, a life member of the St Clair club and a past president of the New Zealand Surf Life-saving Association. The St Clair club will be the first in New Zealand to have a boat specially designed for shark patrol work. Mr Gillies said his design was almost completed. It was hoped to have the boat launched in December so it could patrol the St Clair beach in the holiday period.
