Population
Sir, —Your correspondent, W. B. Bray, having failed to counter the salient points of my argument, now attacks my assumed support of the present economic system, which 1 consider a disgrace. But, were capitalistic resources made available for the Underprivileged countries, using these merely to grow or buy food obviously will encourage over-population, by no means a mythical “bogey.” But this problem is so complex that any one simple solution is likely to be ineffectual and, as most birth controls are incompatible with many religious beliefs, perhaps a medical method to reduce sexual desire or advance menopause, may be found through research. Certainly this writer is not competent to suggest proper solutions, but I can see the blatant flaws in Mr Bray’s reasoning and, one hopes now, so can he.—Yours, etc., D. BROWN. October 5, 1864.
