Water Rates
Sir,—l thank the City Engineer for his comments on my letter concerning water rates. I had hoped for a reply from the' policy-makers rather than from a person charged with carrying out the council’s policy. His reply does not cover the small matter of principle and- the apparent injustices inherent in present council policy with regard to domestic users of water. lam slightly sceptical that unmetered users really do refrain from watering their gardens, -and my question as to the fairness of the present situation remains unanswered. It also raises another apparent injustice in that unmetered users are officially denied the right to water their, gardens. The remedy is simple: either abolish domestic meters, or declare a policy of metering every domestic user within a reasonable time. This latter appeared to be the' import of the City Engineer’s report on the city water supply published in “The Press" in June. Either of these alternatives would ensure that justice was done, and appeared to be done.—Yours, etc ” . A. C. BECK. August 13, 1964. [This letter was sent to the chairman of the works committee of the Christchurch City Council, who was invited to comment. No reply, has been received.]
