“The Press” In 1864

October 5 IMPROVEMENTS IN TIMARU. We notice with pleasure the improvements which are daily taking place in our town. The streets are being made' to their proper level; substantial buildings are to be seen going up in every direction, and it would appear that a new state of things is taking the place of the old. Hitherto, that part of the South road, from the offices of Messrs. Stubbs and King to the top of the next hill going south, has been an unpleasant acclivity, but the work of cutting aWay a part of the hill for the purpose of filling up the gully, • and raising the street in that part to its proper level, has been commenced; and will, when i

completed, greatly improve this portion of the town. A short time since a . very creditable addition to our buildings in the town was made by the erection of a schoolhouse, at a cost of nearly £BOO, and which has recently been opened*. The frame work of new stores belonging to Messrs. Clarkson and Turnbull, situate at the corner of George street and South road, and adjoining the post-office, has during the last week been put up. This building is to be of wood, with a slate roof, and consisting of two stories. There will be three separate entrances for the different departments of their business. We understand that the plate-glass has been imported from England, at

a cost of about' £150; and that the total cost of the building- will be about £2500. The architect is Mr Williamson. We think such signs as these speak well for the progress of our town.— Timaru Herald, Oct. 1. PLEURO - PNEUMONIA.—It will be seen from our report of the proceedings at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, that the case, brought against a man named Williams, recently in . the employ of Mr Fraser of the Mackenzie Country, for crossing cattle from the Otago province, has been dismissed, the prosecutors not being able to fully prove the act We understand that an officer is now to be stationed in this district for the purpose of watching the boundary.—lbid.
