The New Zealand stayer, Royal Duty, and New Zealandbred Sir Dane dominated discussions today on the 16 furlongs weight-for-age Turnbull Stakes at Flemington tomorrow. It will be decided after this race whether Sir Dane will run in the Caulfield Cup or concentrate on the Melbourne Cup. Bookmakers have the pair equal favourites at a quote bordering on odds-on. Havelock, at minimum double figure odds, is closest to them in the betting. While the Turnbull Stakes does look a match between Sir Dane and Royal Duty, cup admirers of New Zealand stayer, Polo Prince, last year’s Caulfield Cup winner. Sometime, and Melbourne Cup winner, Gatum Gatum, will watch their efforts with great interest. The New Zealand filly, Chantal, which has proved herself at a mile, Is given a good chance in the Edward Manifold Stakes, over 10 furlongs.
