MORE FOR MINISTERS
Responsibility Greater (N.Z. Press Association; WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. Responsibilities of a Minister should be regarded as greater than those of the Leader of the Opposition for they were in the dual fields of legislation and administration of the affairs of the country, says the Royal Commission on Parliamentary Salaries. The commission’s report said it had been urged that the Leader, of the Opposition should be paid the same salary as a Minister. If Parliament was in session for a much longer period than was the present practice, a greater increase would have been warranted.
“Comparatively, the increase recommended for the Leader of the Opposition is higher than most of the others, but we feel this is as far as we should go.” A substantial increase in the salary of the Deputy Leader of the Opposition was also recommended: Necessarily he must assume many of the duties and much of the responsibilities which technically lay with the leader but which for valid reasons could not be discharged by him, said the report.
