Trades Council Backs Union The Canterbury . district council of the Federation of Labour on, Thursday evening supported the New Zealand Fire Brigade Federation Industrial Association of Workers in its move to have fire boards reconstituted. The council, said its president (Mr F. D. after the meeting, would support a request by the firemen that fire boards be elected and not appointed. At present the insurance companies, which supplied 50 per cent of the cost of running the brigades, had the right to appoint four insurance company managers to each board. The council welcomed 11 Soviet tourists and exchangedgreetings with them. “The. visitors expressed pleasure at the reception they received,” said Mr Langley. “They said they were interested in meeting the people of New Zealand in the hope of creating understanding among the peoples of all nations in the interests of maintaining world peace,”
