FOR NAVAL BOARD

Commander Of Royalist (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 2. Changes in major naval appointments which will be made later this year were announced today by the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre). He said at the beginning of November Captain B. E. Turner, the present commanding officer of the cruiser, H.M.N.Z.S. Royalist will become second naval member of the New Zealand Naval Board and will serve in that appointment in the rank of commodore. Captain Turner will succeed Commodore C. C. Stevens, who has been a member of the board since April, 1963. Commodore Stevens will retire, completing 31 years’ naval service which began when he joined the Canterbury division of the Volunteer Reserve. He is a former commanding officer of the Royalist, and served on exchange with the Royal Australian Navy before coming to the Navy Office in 1962 as Assistant-Chief of Naval Staff.

Mr Eyre said the new commanding officer of the Royalist would be Captain J. P. S. Valiant, who commands the Navy’s main shore establishment, H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel. Captain Valiant’s successor will be announced shortly.
