NO VISIT TO RUSSIA

Finance Given As Reason (N.Z Press Association) WESTPORT, Sept. 29. The refusal of New Zealand miners to accept an invitation from the Soviet Union to visit Russia was mainly because of finance, the president of the Central Committee of the Buller Miners’ Union (Mr J. B. Cotter) said this morning when asked to comment on the outcome of the recent ballot. “New Zealand miners are interested in visiting all countries when our finances improve,” he said. “At the moment our funds are not the best and a visit such as the one proposed would have meant a levy on all New Zealand miners.” Mr Cotter said the return trip to Russia would have cost the New Zealand Mineworkers’ Union a minimum of £4lO for each of the two members invited. He explained that Denniston miners had not taken part in the ballot through a mistake in dates but did not consider that the voting at Denniston would have affected the result in any way
