SUGGESTION TO PANEL

Easter Hockey School Three “suggestions or directions” to the national hockey selection and coaching nanel were drafted by the New Zealand association's management committee. The number attending next year's Easter coaching school should be between 25 and 80. Someone else could be added to the panel to assist with coaching. Nominations of outstanding schoolboys could be invited f om local associations. The secretary (Mr M. R. Good) said two of the three selectors, B. Turner and I. D. Armstrong (the third, P. G. Bygrave, is captaining the New Zealand team in Tokyo), were thinking of a larger school with predominantly younger players, or "colts.” Mr C. A. Rogers asked If "we are angling our policy year-by-year or for the 1968 Olympics.” The New Zealand team for the 1956 Olympics had been "born” a* the 1952 school—as young players—and the team built up. Mr Rogers then said he had an idea about coaching, but as he did not wish to make the idea public, the meeting went into committee. After a lengthy discussion, the meeting came out of committee and adopted a resolution that the school be held next Easter. When discussing the directions to the panel, Mr R. S. Jenkins said a feeling prevailed that a selector formulated policy with regard to his teams. He had never felt that and thought the direction should come from the committee. It was then decided that the 1965 school be held “with an eye to 1968.” Mr Abrams: These coaching schools are as important as bringing out an Indian, to my way of thinking. Let the young players think they are being taken notice of—and as many as possible. Mr Rogers: Should we add to the panel for coaching purposes. I was thinking of someone in New Zealand like Frank Wells (the Auckland selector and a former Indian representative), rather than bringing an Indian. The chairman (Mr S. Burnell Browne): Might it be an idea to invite lan Smith (a South Island selector)? Mr Rogers’ suggestion that local associations be invited to nominate any really outstanding schoolboy was then generally agreed upon by the committee.
