“SALARIES TOO LOW”

N.Z. Medical Staff (N.Z. Prest Association' AUCKLAND. Sept. 29 New Zealand was not in the market for university medical staff with salaries at their present level, said Professor D. G. Bonham, head of the post-graduate school of obstetrics and gynaecology on his return from a three-week world trip today. ( “We cannot hope to attract the best on our salaries unless (men had a personal reason for coming to New Zealand,” Professor Bonham said. “This will be one of the real problems in establishing a medical school in Auckland and indeed in maintaining a (top level of staff at Dunedin.” ( This situation applied not | only to the L’nited States and Britain, but also to Australia, he said. In Australia hospital and university doctors were allowed to practise in private which supplemented their incomes up to 50 per cent and gave them considerable extra tax benefits. Professor Bonham said New Zealand was not accepted in the world as it should be for the work being done here. “We should have more of our medical and scientific men travelling to mark us a place on the world map.” he said. “If the enthusiasm and brains we have here had anything like the same facilities and financial support as those in the United States a great deal more could be achieved," Professor Bonham said.
