Supporters Optimistic On N.Z. Batting
An optimistic reminder is given to the president, and manager of the New Zealand team to tour England next year, Mr W. A. Hadlee, by the annual report of the Canterbury Cricket Supporters’ Club.
The report, wishing Mr Hadlee and the team well, offers the assurance that “any one of his men who bats through two days will leave a memorable imprint on the game of cricket!” The report also feels sure that “this team will not be afraid to open up the game through fear of losing.” Issued on behalf of the, committee by the chairman (Professor H. J. Hopkins) and secretary (Mr N. B. Ullrich), the report says that “we shall, in a short time, establish a corporate entity. This aim will be furthered when membership booklets are issued and members begin to wear the club tie (which is now available). The i committee interprets the rule to mean that members may. purchase the tie as soon asi they have paid their third annual subscription.” Grants of £450 The committee is to recomimend to the annual meeting in October that a total grant I of £450 be made this year, lit is envisaged that this will be divided as follows: £lOO to the C.C.A. for the establishing of the Honours Board, which the club will maintain in the future. £lOO to the C.C.A. for general purposes. £2OO for coaching, with specific reference to primary school cricket. £25 each to the Ashburton and North Canterbury i Minor Associations for the improvement of i wickets in those areas. The committee will also recommend two changes in the rules—to allow business firms and corporate organisations to become members, and to
streamline the procedure regarding election. Another point the report makes is “to urge the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation to give better cover for | for overseas teams than st gave last (the recent) winter.”
