Bigger Forestry Voice In F.A.O. Wanted

(Neto Zealand Press Association)

ROTORUA, Sept. 28. Forestry should have stronger and greater representation at the next general assembly of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, in November, 1965, if it were to obtain improved status in the F.A.O. This plea was made at the seventh session of the AsiaPacific Forestry Commission in Rotorua by Dr. N. A. Osara, director of the F.A.O.’s forestry and forest products division. Dr. Osara said the division at present had difficulty in expanding its activities be-

. cause forestry was not ac- » cepted within the F.A.O. as one of the top-level divisions. Dr. Osara said how impor--1 tant it would be for delega--1 tions to the assembly to ini elude forestry representa- , tions. j Although usually delegations were headed by minis- , ters of agriculture, ministers of forests should at least be j members of delegations or even head them if possible. j Dr. Osara, outlining his ; proposals for 1966-67, said discussions being carried out ! with a number of foundations ! could result in a trust which . would not only provide - money, but also allow a flexible outlook for projects. He intended to endeavour to establish a world tree seed centre. “It is an institution which should have been started many years ago. It is to be hoped we will be able to get the capital.”
