Forestry Outlook “Bright, Exciting”

(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, September 28. The outlook for forestry in Asia and the Pacific is “bright, even exciting,” says the final report of the seventh session of the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission in Rotorua, presented this afternoon.

The report sets out four main goals through which the present unbalance between regional resources and requirements could best be redressed by member countries. The report said the commission was cognisant of the many difficulties which would have to be overcome before forestry in the Asia-Pacific region could make the optimum contribution to economic and social values. “It is convinced, however, in the light of past, current and predictable future developments, that the outlook is bright, even exciting. “A rational programme of forest development can be a significant factor in promoting human welfare throughout the whole region.” Each member country, said the report, should work as rapidly as possible towards: Providing an up-to-date and more precise evaluation of resources and requirements than was supplied for the timber trends study of the region in 1961; Encouraging full co-operation by trade interests in developing a demand for the many timbers not presently used; Ensuring that all levels of forestry training give an adequate coverage of logging, transportation and

the various facets of utilisation and marketing, all of which represent a large proportion of the cost structure of forest products in their final form.
