DECIMAL COINS

‘ Designs To Last” (N Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, Sept. 28. The designs of New Zealand's new decimal coins should be announced by November, the chairman of the Select Committee on Decimal Coinage (Mr R. D. Muldoon) said today. A total of 18 designs for the range of coins, submitted by 12 New Zealand and overseas designers, were under consideration, he said. “There is no doubt that we will have a wonderful range of designs to choose from,” said Mr Muldoon. “Some magnificent coins have been designed for the new countries overseas and designers have had the opportunity in recent years to perfect their techniques.” The committee was concerned. Mr Muldoon said, to get designs which would still be attractive 40 or so years hence. “My only criticism of the Australian decimal coins is that they are somewhat modernistic. That sort of art tends to date and what is acceptable now may not be 401 years hence.” Of the seven initial coins, the one and two-cent pieces would be of copper, and the five, 10, 20 and 50 cent coins of cupro-nickel, as used at present
