Besieged Cardinal

(N.Z P.A.-Reuter—copyright ■ BONN, Sept. 28. Mr Kadar, the Hungarian Prime Minister, said yesterday that “under no circumstances will we permit Mindszenty to depart from his present place of residence as a victor with flags flying.” Cardinal Mindszenty took refuge in the American Legation in Budapest when the Hungarian uprising collapsed in 1956. There have been reports that the Hungarian Government would be prepared to let him go and live in Rome, but that the Cardinal is refusing to leave the legation unless he can remain in Hungary.
