Second Diesel Hauled Out

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 24. The second unit of the diesel locomotive which crashed into a mangrove swamp near Opua on August 30 was hauled free of the mud and put back on the rails just before midnight. The first unit involved in the crash, in which a youth was killed, was hauled back on to the rails on Monday. Two 40-ton capacity cranes running on a temporary railway constructed along the side of the wreck were used for the salvage. Thirty workers have been engaged on the work since early this month. The District Railways Engineer, Auckland (Mr R. H. Newton), said it was the toughest salvage job in which he had been- involved.
