TRANSPORT DEPT. CARS

Replacements

Arrive

By the end of October the Transport Department in the Canterbury-Nelson district will have 14 new cars in its fleet of 50. Four arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday from Australia and two more were landed yesterday. According to Transport Department officials, the cars are of a standard type found in any showroom. But before they are put into service as patrol cars they will have to have various fittings such as radios and flashing red lights installed. They are already painted black with white roofs.

The number of replacements has for the last three or four years been fairly constant between 13 anc 15.Some older vehicles will be relegated to duties not involving high speed work, such as for use by vehicle inspectors and school transport officers
