ST. LEGER GOES TO INDIANA
(N Z. Press Association—Copyright)
DONCASTER, Sept. 9. The Victorian jockey, W. Williamson, riding the Irish-trained filly, Patti, was beaten by a head in the St. Leger, the final classic of the British racing season, here this afternoon. Indiana, owned by the American business tycoon, Charles Engelhard, won the Classic at odds of 100/7. Indiana, a bay colt by Saya-
jirao, was strongly ridden by J. Lindley, who brought his mount through at the twofurlong mark, and raced on strongly to resist the efforts of Williamson. Patti, trained by P. Prendergast, started at 100/8. The other American-owned horse, the Epsom-trained outsider, Soderini, finished four lei.gths away third. Soderini started at 45/1. Soderini, ridden by G. Lewis, finished strongly to deprive I. Titan, one of the two joint favourites, of third place. The St. Leger, the oldest of the British Classics, was the richest on record, the winning owner receiving more than £43,000. Mr Engelhard, who also has mining interests in South Africa, flew over from the United States to see his colt win. In the Epsom Derby, Santa Claus, ridden by A. W. Breasley, beat Indiana. The St. Leger would have been a good thing for Santa Claus, had it been possible to train him for this race, but he was scratched because of the hard ground. A crowd of over 30,000 watched the race in fine but cool autumn weather. The going was good to firm. The time for the race was 3min ssec.
