GOLDSMITH TROPHY

N.Z. Soccer XI Is Strong Fielding a team almost entirely made up of Canterbury senior representatives, New Zealand is heavily favoured to retain the L. A. Goldsmith Trophy for the soccer “international” series. New Zealand begins its quest tomorrow with a firstround match against England which, without G. Evans at centre-half, is well below the strength of former years. New Zealand will be without A. Gowans, the right-half, who will be with other members Of the under 18 team gathering pine cones to raise money for its trip to Australia, but even so the side should be too strong for England. The teams for the early game, between Scotland and The Rest, appear to be more evenly matched but The Rest, with its mixture of New Zealanders, Dutch, a Channel Islander (J. le Poidevin), an Italian (F. Madrussen) and English, is likely to go through to meet New Zealand in the final.
