Camp Project Discussed By Youth Committee
The summer and adventure camp site at Lake Taylor offered wonderful opportunities for groups to take part in every aspect of outdoor living, Mr F. Carter, representing the Physical Education Society, said at a meeting of the Canterbury regional committee of the National Youth Council.
The hut at Lake Taylor, which had 36 bunks, was accessible by car at most times of the year, and there was a second but less accessible hut at Lake Sumner, about 13 miles away, he said.
For the establishment of an adventure camp, he said, he envisaged the modernisation of the Lake Taylor hut, the building of a shed to house equipment such as canoes, ropes and climbing equipment, and perhaps a second hut for girls and women. Last year he had taken a party of young people to the Lake Sumner hut, many of whom knew virtually nothing about outdoor living, and they had thoroughly enjoyed it. He was planning a similar trip. The Physical Education Society was very interested in the project and willing to provide money to assist, he said. It was necessary that the camp should be controlled by an organisation or body that could ensure adequate supervision, because the area could be dangerous. Mr L. J. Coughlan said that the Internal Affairs Department had recommended the regional youth committee as an organisation to take over the establishing of the camp. The Government was prepared to grant a sum to establish it and to assist in maintenance costs. The committee expressed interest in the recommendation and decided to refer to the organisations it represents before the next meeting. It requested an official proposal from the Internal Affairs Department
