Interest Well Maintained In Ashburton Competitions

Interest in the competitions was again well maintained yesterday, the third day of the Ashburton Competitions Society’s festival, and many classes produced particularly keen competition. Children competing in the piano solo classes were most accomplished, and earned the judge’s commendations for their performances. One of the outstanding competitors yesterday was a diminutive six-year-old Christchurch boy, lan McKerrow, who won the vocal solo in character for children under 12 years. The youngest in his class, he gained among the highest marks of the day in any section, choosing “An Australian Song” for his act. Dressed as a swagman, with a grubby face and a varied array of “props,”’ including a campfire, gum trees, and koala bear, he looked a miniature version of the real thing and delighted the audience with his accomplished performance. The judge of this class, Mr G. R. Wells, said he made “an excellent outback man, with good actions and costuming and a well-character-ised song.” Results of yesterday’s judging were:— In the following results competitors are from Ashburton unless otherwise stated:— VOCAL ANO INSTRUMENTAL Plano and .
