PAYMENT DISPUTE
‘Stay-down' Bv Miners J (N.Z P. A -Reuter—i Copyright > COVENTRY, Aug. 31. Two coal miners at 5 o’clock this morning completed the first week of a stay-down protest half a mile below ground at a colliery near Coventry. They began their endurance protest for £2 4s—a bonus payment which, they say, should have been made. Both have been sacked for refusing to come to the surface. For a week they have existed on a diet of tea, soup and sandwiches, and little or no sleep. Sleeping in mines is forbidden by Act of Parliament. Every time they nod off they are quickly prodded awake.
