U.K. Cyprus Bases Raised In Talks

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) ALEXANDRIA, August 31. President Makarios is due to fly home to Cyprus today after talks with President Nasser about British bases on Cyprus. In Geneva, Cyprus was among the topics discussed at a meeting between U Thant, the United Nations SecretaryGeneral, and Mr Tsarapkin, the Soviet delegate to the disarmament conference.

Ankara police used truncheons last night to disperse demonstrators who wanted to continue anti-American demonstrations. The Minister of the Interior, Mr Oztrak, promised strong measures would be

taken against any repetition of the riots at Izmir international fair, West Turkey, in which the pavilions of Russia, Britain, America and other countries were attacked on Saturday. The fair has been closed. The Soviet Government protested to Turkey over the wrecking of the Russian pavilion and called for the punishment of the offenders. A Cyprus Government spokesman in Nicosia said an agreement on supplies for the Turkish-Cypriot community in the island would come into effect today. He said it would cover fuel and other supplies to hospitals. Swedish United Nations troops reported seeing two unidentified jets flying over Xeros, north-west Cyprus, yesterday. Other aircraft flew over the same area on Friday and Saturday, according to the United Nations.

The planes were believed to be Turkish.

Several shots were reported in Nicosia and other parts of the island during the night but no casualties have been reported. Greek-Cypriot police are continuing their investigation into a bomb explosion in Nicosia last night which killed a youth of 16 and injured three other persons in an open-air restaurant.
