Australia won both the opening singles to take a 2-0 lead at the end of the first day of the Davis Cup inter-zone final against Sweden yesterday. The Wimbledon champion, R. Emerson, had to fight back from two sets down before defeating J. E. Lundquist, 2-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5, in 2hr 25min. Lundquist’s defeat after his brilliant start was his first in 18 successive matches on the Baastad red-clay centre court. Emerson, after levelling at two-sets all, pulled up from 1-4 and 3-5 in the fifth set before he clinched victory. The winner of the match will play the United States in the challenge round.
