Employment
Sir, —According to a recent news item the Manufacturers’ Association is keen to import extra labour from such places as Italy and Spain, and it was pointed out that they are bearing in mind raising the immigration rate. 1 believe this should be encouraged, as our present labour force is very much overworked. When one considers the number of men, especially in government employment, who are working at a second job besides their regular work, one can understand why it is that such departments as the railways (to name only one sphere of employment) have run at a loss in the past. The country should not expect its gallant working men to work eight hours at night cleaning premises and then have to turn out fresh and willing at 8 a.m. for a stint at the work-bench. Those days are long past.—-Yours, etc., MAY DAY, ’65. August 27, 1964.
