Cousins Cheviot Hospital has as patients at present three sisters and four babies, who are first cousins. Two years ago two sisters gave birth to daughters within a few days of each other. Recently they repeated the performance only this time the babies were boys. They have now been joined by a third sister who has had twin girls. Platelayer The Inland Revenue Department’s public information bulletin records another joke against itself. It says a clerk in one district office was writing to a taxpayer whose residential address was unknown, but whose occupation was shown as “platelayer, New Zealand Railways.” He addressed his letter “c/o The Refreshment Branch, New Zealand Railways.” Probationary Drivers
The issue of probationary driver’s licences to new applicants and the provision of probationary licences only to drivers under 21 years of age are proposed, by the Automobile Association (Otago). It will ask the South Island Motor Union conference to consider these ideas as a means of reducing accidents among young and inexperienced drivers. “Abominable” Food Some of the chefs’ entries for the first New Zealand National Food Fair were of such poor quality that he had to get rid of them, said the fair’s chairman (Mr G. Kerr) yesterday. When he inspected the chefs’ entries on display at the fair yesterday he described various ones as “abominable,” “terrible,” “ghastly,” and “dreadful.” He told two reporters that other entries were “distinctly of genius,” “superb,” “really first class,” and “sophisticated.” The multicoloured dishes were of confectionery, poultry and hams. Cold And Wet The first rain for 19 days (7 points fell at Harewood between 8 a.m. and noon) and winter temperatures were experienced in Christchurch yesterday. The maximum temperatures were 42 degrees at Harewood at 2 p.m., and 45 on the Government Life building at 4.30 p.m. The day was overcast with a south-westerly wind, and the rain, which began falling at about 8.30 a.m., followed frosts of 6 degrees at Harewood and 8 degrees at the Botanic Gardens.
