TROTTING Lordship Will Be Hot Hutt Park Favourite

Lordship will be at cramped odds when he attempts to win the Roydon Lodge Free-for-all on the first night of the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting at Hutt Park Raceway tomorrow. Lordship last Saturday started from 42 yards and gained a decisive win over 13 furlongs in the National Handicap at Addington Raceway.

Lordship gave a start and a sound beating to five of liis rivals in tomorrow night’s race, which is the first leg of the double. The fact that he meets them on so much more favourable terms and has drawn reasonably at No. 7 on the limit ensures that the chances of few of his rivals will be considered seriously.

Mrs D. G. Nyhan’s six-year-old stands but just as much as Cardigan Bay did when he won this race 12 months ago and paid £1 6s for a win and £1 5s for a place.

Vanderford will propably be second favourite for the race and after his Splendid finish for third in the Louisson Handicap on the first day of the national meeting, he could be the hardest for Lordship to beat.

This will be the fifth occasion on which Lordship and Vanderford have met. So far honours are with Vanderford, which has finished in front of Lordship three times. Their first meeting was on February 20 last at Hutt Park when Vanderford, from 24 yards, was third to Gay Reel and Master Alan in the Wellington Cup, with Lordship,' I also on 24 yards, in fifth 'place. Vanderford and Lordship started from the same i mark on the Capital HandiI cap at Hutt Park on February 22, Vanderford finishing second to Gay Reel, w’ith Lordship again fifth.

Their third meeting was in the sprint qualifying heat of the Easter Cup at Addington on March 21. Flying Blue, from the limit, was first, with Vanderford, from 18 yards, second, and Lordship, from 12 yards, a length back third. Lordship started from 36 yards when he won the Easter Cup Final, with Vanderford, which started from 30 yards, tiring to tenth. Only if Lordship receives a poor run does it appear that Vanderford will have much chance of beating his older rival tomorrow. Place Chance Jay Ar has shown splendid form on previous visits to Hutt Park and he could be a ■ sound place prospect. He overcame difficulties when he finished sixth in the National Handicap last week, and under these conditions, bis chances must be highly rated.

Master Alan and Waitaki Hanover, fourth and fifth respectively in the National Handicap, are both near their best and they could be prominent, as also could Junior Royal and Affiliate. Adioway, a stablemate of Jay Ar, will probably be favourite for the second leg, the Harold Murphy Memorial Handicap in spite of his long absence from racing because of recurring soreness. He last started in May, 1962, but showed that he retained much of his old brilliance when he won at the recent Addington trials. Adioway has great speed and stamina and if he receives a reasonable run, he should be too good for most in this field. Adio Morn, a member of G.

Holmes’s Templeton team, should be improved by the race he had in the Four-year-old Stakes on the first day of the national meeting. He confirmed this at the Methven trials earlier in the week. Adio Morn has drawn favourably in a capacity field and he could well extend Adioway. Douce was one of the top two-year-old fillies of last season. She has not raced since she finished seventh in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes in May. She has drawn No. 3 at the barrier and should be prominent all the way. Dorstan, Bonnie Lord, Carina Star and Ruling Caste are another four smart Canterbury candidates for this race, but they will be hard pressed to match the speed of Adioway and Adio Morn. Count Windermere could be the pick of five North Island runners in this event, while Flying Melody and Trysail, from Southland, might add interest to the finish. 8.30 p.m.— ROYDON LODGE FREE-FOR-ALL. 2:11 class; £1310; lira. 1000 Affiliate (12) .. ..It. 0300 Dandy Briar (1) ...
